Minister
Rev. John D. Guthrie
John Guthrie is our pastor. He and his wife Pam arrived here in Henderson in January of 2008. They have two daughters: Katie who is on staff with Young Life in Arizona, and Whitney who is a missionary in Chile. Pam works at the Hugh E. Sandefur Training Center here in Henderson.
John was ordained in 1979 after graduating from Wesley Theological Seminary with his M. Div degree. His undergraduate study was done at Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, VA. [a very fine Presbyterian college founded in May 1776….older than our nation!]
He has pastored churches in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. One of the reasons why John is proud to be a PCUSA pastor is the freedom that is given to congregations to seek out and call pastors of their own choosing. The Spirit can really guide those choices!
John feels a strong calling in our community to “Common Word,” a weekly half-hour radio show that is presented each Sunday morning on WSON radio 860AM. This unscripted, ecumenical round-table discussion of lectionary readings for each Sunday brings together four faith traditions: United Methodist, Episcopal, Roman Catholic, and Presbyterian. Past audios can be downloaded from the WSON website under their “Audio Archives.”
John is also excited to support the Brain Injury Adventure Camp, Inc. , a non-profit organization that our congregation has been supporting since its inception in 2010. The mission of BIAC http://biacky.org/ is to build facilities on a 42 acre farm in Robards, KY so that people with brain injury can come to this beautiful location that is dedicated to their achieving their own goals.
“RevJohn” enjoys his hobbies of working on antique tractors, camping, horse-back riding, biking, yard work, and just futzing around in his man-cave!
In summary, God is so amazing! The Guthries are so grateful and thankful for God’s grace.
